What is Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal is a very common, tooth-saving procedure used when the soft inner tissue of a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack. Modern root canals are highly effective and no more uncomfortable than getting a standard filling.
Ideal Candidates
Patients experiencing severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling and tenderness in the gums, or a darkening of the tooth. If an infected tooth is left untreated, it can cause a severe abscess and eventually require extraction.
Key Benefits
- Stops severe tooth pain and eliminates infection
- Saves your natural tooth, preventing the need for extraction and an implant
- Allows you to keep your natural smile
- Prevents the spread of infection to other teeth or your jawbone
- Restores normal biting and chewing sensation
How Does It Work?
After thoroughly numbing the tooth and surrounding area, we create a small opening in the crown of the tooth. We carefully remove the infected pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the root canals, and then seal the space with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. Finally, we place a temporary filling to close the opening.
Recovery & Aftercare
It is normal for the tooth to feel sensitive or tender for a few days after the procedure, especially if there was significant infection beforehand. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually all that is needed. You must return to our office to have a permanent crown placed on the tooth to protect it and restore it to full function.
