What is Periodontal Therapy?

Periodontal therapy encompasses various treatments for gum disease (periodontitis), an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to severe bone loss and eventually tooth loss. Our therapy focuses on deep cleaning and arresting the infection.

Ideal Candidates

Patients experiencing red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, or loose teeth. Gum disease is incredibly common, and catching it early is the key to preventing irreversible damage.

Key Benefits

  • Halts the progression of gum disease
  • Prevents tooth loss and jawbone deterioration
  • Freshens breath and reduces gum inflammation
  • Improves overall systemic health (gum disease is linked to heart disease and diabetes)
  • Creates a healthy foundation for your teeth

How Does It Work?

The most common early treatment is called Scaling and Root Planing (a deep cleaning). Under local anesthesia, we meticulously clean deep below the gum line to remove hardened tartar and bacteria (scaling). We then smooth the root surfaces of your teeth (planing) so the gums can reattach firmly. We may also place a localized antibiotic directly into the gum pockets.

Recovery & Aftercare

Your gums will likely be tender and may bleed slightly for a few days following a deep cleaning. Your teeth might also be sensitive to cold. We will recommend a special mouth rinse and soft diet for a few days to promote swift healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) is reversible. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot be fully cured, but it can be successfully managed and controlled with periodontal therapy and diligent home care.

We use local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and feel no pain during the procedure.

After periodontal therapy, we typically place patients on a 'periodontal maintenance' schedule, requiring cleanings every 3 to 4 months to keep the bacteria in check.

The bacteria that cause gum disease can be passed through saliva, so it is possible to share it with partners or family members, making good oral hygiene vital for everyone in the household.
