What is Oral Cancer Screenings?

An oral cancer screening is a routine, painless examination performed by our dentists to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth. Early detection is the absolute most important factor in successfully treating oral cancer.

Ideal Candidates

Every adult patient should receive an oral cancer screening. It is especially crucial for individuals at higher risk, including those who use tobacco, consume heavy amounts of alcohol, have a previous history of oral cancer, or have significant sun exposure (which increases the risk of lip cancer).

Key Benefits

  • Detects oral cancer early when it is most treatable
  • Provides peace of mind regarding your oral health
  • Quick and painless procedure
  • Identifies other non-cancerous oral conditions that may need attention
  • Included as part of your standard comprehensive dental exam

How Does It Work?

The screening is seamlessly integrated into your regular dental checkup. Dr. Abdeen will visually examine your lips, gums, tongue, the inside of your cheeks, and the roof and floor of your mouth for any red or white patches, sores, or abnormalities. He will also gently feel the tissues in your mouth and neck to check for lumps or abnormalities.

Recovery & Aftercare

There is no recovery, pain, or downtime associated with an oral cancer screening. It is a quick, completely non-invasive visual and physical exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

The screening only takes a couple of minutes and is done as part of your routine dental checkup.

Signs include a sore that doesn't heal, a white or red patch on the gums or tongue, a lump in the mouth or neck, or difficulty swallowing. Let us know if you experience any of these.

Yes. While tobacco use is a major risk factor, oral cancer can affect anyone, including those with no known risk factors.
